What is provitamin B5?
AKA Panthenol. What it does & how it works.
Provitamin B5, AKA panthenol, is an essential skin vitamin. When applied to the skin, it converts to pantothetic acid, which is a natural component of the skin and plays a key role in maintaining a healthy barrier.
1. Soothing: It has a calming effect on skin, reducing redness, itch and sensitivity. This is why at Korean pharmacies, you will often get recommended a 5% panthenol cream as a non-steroidal alternative.
2. Barrier Repair: By supporting skin renewal, it helps strengthen the skin barrier and helps make skin more resilient against irritants, allergens and environmental stressors.
3. Wound Healing: Promotes cell proliferation and repair. It's why in Europe, you will find it at 5% in wound ointments and nappy rash ointments for diapering.
4. Hydration & Moisture Retention. It also helps to attract and bind water to the skin, helping skin stay plump and hydrating, reducing dryness and flakiness.
Safety profile
Provitamin B5 (aka Panthenol) has been used for 70+ years, including on infants with atopic dermatitis, nappy rash ointments and nipple creams for breastfeeding.
You can read more on the 70+ year safety and effectiveness track record of panthenol here
WHY ITs BELOVED in KOREAN SKINCARE
Provitamin B5, AKA panthenol, is a hero ingredient in Korean skincare because it fits perfectly with the Korean philosophy of gentle, barrier-first care.
You will find it in Korean at 5% for soothing or multipurpose creams that target barrier repair, hydration, and calming sensitivity.
In Korea, it is used both for children and also for adults whose skin barriers need repairing, especially post-laser or after overusing strong products that damage their skin barriers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I use this as a spot treatment
You can use this as you would a balm or ointment as a spot treatment for dry, rough and eczema-prone areas. We recommend applying at least twice daily - or as often as needed.
Can adults use this product?
Adults with eczema-prone skin can absolutely benefit. We've set a higher bar on safety, allergens and irritants for little ones, but our adult beta testers have also loved these soothing products for themselves, especially on dry hands and their own eczema-prone spots.
How does Soothe & Seal Ultra-Rich Cream soothe without steroids?
We designed this product to address three known deficits in eczema-prone skin:
(1) Inflammation
(2) Weak and leaky skin barrier
(3) Disturbed skin microbiome and higher levels of bad bacteria
(1) Inflammation: we essential skin vitamins, minerals and compounds at levels that have been shown in research to be anti-inflammatory, reduce redness, and reduce itch. This includes 5% provitamin B5 (AKA panthenol or dexpanthenol), which is widely used in South Korea for soothing damaged skin barriers and has been used for more than 8 decades safely, including on infants. We also use zinc oxide and allantoin (a compound naturally found in the human body and plants, which also serves as a skin protectant).
(2) Weak and leaky skin barrier: We replenish skin lipids and moisture using biocompatible ingredients to help mitigate dryness and help "plug up the leaks" in the skin barrier by forming a long-lasting protective barrier. Skin identical ingredients include: ceramides (triple lipid), squalane, hyaluronic acid, sodium PCA and glycerin. We also use best-in-class skin protectant ingredients to lock-in moisture and reduce allergen penetration, including petrolatum, mineral oil and dimethicone. These ingredients are beloved by dermatologists for their superior ability to reduce water loss in skin. To ensure safety and purity, we use European Pharmacopeia grade white petrolatum and white mineral oil only.
(3) Disturbed skin microbiome and higher levels of bad bacteria: The skin has an acid mantle with a pH acidic environment to support the right bacteria thriving and discourage bad bacteria. Eczema skin can be pH unbalanced, leading to an overgrowth of bad bacteria, especially S. Aureus, which can also lead to further inflammation. We include ingredients - including beta glucan, lactobionic acid and gluconolactone - which have been shown to decrease levels of S. Aureus and also pH balance our product.
When do I use this product
You can use Soothe & Seal Ultra-Rich Cream at any time and year-round on dry areas. Some parents like to apply in the morning before daycare / school and then in the evening before bedtime.
We also recommend applying on face before mealtime as a barrier cream to reduce skin contact with food and after bath time to help lock-in moisture.
We'll note that skin that needs extra-care may benefit from more than twice daily application.
In warm, humid weather and in sweat prone areas, such as creases, we recommend applying a very thin layer.
Where is this manufactured?
We take inspiration from Korean barrier care and hero ingredients, but we manufacture in the United States so that our team can stay close to the manufacturing site.
We manufacture in a top FDA-registered and cGMP compliant facility. It regularly passes FDA audits for processes and safety.
We have also undergone extensive testing - including challenge testing, shelf stability testing and clinical testing for irritation (above and beyond industry standards).
