What is baby eczema
-
Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a common skin condition in babies characterized by itchy, dry and inflamed skin. It is not contagious and often appears within the first few months of life.
-
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, eczema can affect up to 25% of children. While many children's eczema improves as they grow older and their skin barriers mature, some will continue to have eczema into adulthood. The CDC estimates about 7% of adults have eczema.
-
As frustrating as it can be - baby eczema does not have a single, definitive cause. But rather, it can be caused by a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors.
For genetics, mutations in the filaggrin gene can lead to a decrease in filaggrin protein, which is a key protein in the outermost layer of the skin. This can result in a weakened skin barrier, more water loss, more dry & scaly skin, and a pH imbalance, leading to eczema.
Environmental factors can be wide-ranging - irritants like soaps & detergents, allergens like dust mites, pollen and pet dander, and environmental conditions like extreme heat, cold and dry or humid air -- can all contribute to eczema. -
Currently there is no cure for eczema. However, various treatments and management strategies can help control symptoms and minimize flare-ups.
Many children can also "outgrow" their eczema as they grow older and has their skin barrier matures. But, actively managing eczema in the younger years is nonetheless critical to skin health.

-
We go beyond “clean.”
At Song Lab, we don’t follow trends or marketing lists that label ingredients as “dirty” without science. Instead, we take a clinical, evidence-based approach to ingredient safety — especially for sensitive and developing skin.
- Contact allergens are substances that upon skin contact, triggers an allergic reaction. Known contact allergens are commonly found in baby / kid skincare products, including: fragrance, lanolin, balsam peru, propylene glycol, coamidopropyl betaine, lavender, phenoxyethanol, peppermint. Read the full list here
- Studies have shown that regular use of skincare products with food ingredients in people with eczema can lead to the development of a food allergy. We use no food ingredients, including: coconut oil, olive oil, sweet almond oil, macademia nut oil, oats, goat milk, mango extract, etc. Read more on this from Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia here
- 100+ chemicals banned under the 'Proposition 65' law. You can view the full list here.
- Free from any of the National Eczema Association Ecz-clusion List and the NEA list of ingredients to avoid if you have eczema
- The gap between EU and US standards is often exaggerated, as many ingredients on the EU banned list would never be found in a US product (for instance, they put cyanide on the ban list, which would not be found in a US company). But for peace of mind, we exclude 1584 skincare and cosmetic ingredients restricted and banned by the European Union. You can view the full list here
- All of the chemicals of concern called out by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics with one exception: citric acid in our wash products, which our research has deemed safe in wash-off products. We also proudly use European Pharmacopeia grade white petrolatum and white mineral oil, which CSC has called out for having no known safety risks due to being highly properly refined. You can read the full list here.

Most people notice a difference in skin softness and comfort within the first few uses — especially if the skin was dry, rough, or irritated.
That said, barrier repair in eczema-prone skin takes time. For deeper benefits like:
- Reduced visible dryness or flaking
- Calmer, less reactive skin
- Stronger, more resilient skin barrier
…you can expect to see meaningful results within 14 days of consistent use.
Our hero ingredient in Soothe & Seal Ultra-Rich Cream is 5% provitamin B5. A study found that a 5% provitamin B5 ointment was as effective as a 1% hydrocortisone (steroid) ointment after 2 weeks, although the steroid worked more quickly after 1 week. You can read the study here. However, unlike a steroid, provitamin B5 can be used year-round, with a 70 year safety track record.

Song Lab products undergo rigorous testing that goes above and beyond industry standards:
- Industry standard for human repeated insult patch testing (HRIPT) is 50 people for assessing potential of a substance to cause allergic skin reactions or irritation. We go above and beyond and test on 200, including those with sensitive skin.
- We go beyond industry standards to ensure product safety and stability — including running accelerated stability testing at 2x the typical duration to validate shelf life
- We conduct Challenge testing (also known as PET testing) to ensure that our product is effectively guarded against bacteria, yeast and mold growth

“Ultra-hypoallergenic” means that a product is specifically formulated to minimize the risk of allergic reactions — even more rigorously than typical ‘hypoallergenic’ products.
At Song Lab, that means:
✓ Designed without any of 80+ American Contact Dermatitis Society (ACDS) core allergens commonly found in skincare, such as lanolin, fragrance, propylene glycol, phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate, peppermint, lavender, ylangylang, tea tree oil
✓ Free from all food ingredients due to allergy potential, like coconut oil, almond oil, olive oil, oats, goat's milk. Read why food ingredients are a problem here
✓ Free from any of the National Eczema Association Ecz-clusion List and the NEA list of ingredients to avoid if you have eczema -
We take a science-first, safety-above-all approach to ingredient selection — especially because our products are made for the most sensitive skin.
At Song Lab, we evaluate every ingredient based on:
- Clinical evidence.
We prioritize ingredients with strong support in medical literature, including use in dermatology and pediatric skin care. - Proof points from Korean skincare.
We look at Korean skincare for proof points that ingredients are both effective and safe for widespread use in an entire country - Biocompatibility.
We choose ingredients that support the skin’s natural barrier, like ceramides, panthenol (provitamin B5), squalane, and zinc oxide. - Allergen safety
We exclude over 80 known contact allergens, based on the American Contact Dermatitis Society’s Core Allergen list. - Food-free formulation.
We avoid food-based ingredients (like coconut oil, oats, nut oils) due to their potential role in early-life sensitization. - Sensitive skin testing.
We assess both the function and irritation potential of every input — we don’t just follow clean beauty trends; we follow data.
- Clinical evidence.

Song Lab is formulated to be non-comedogenic, meaning it’s designed not to clog pores.
We avoid oils with high comedogenic scores, like coconut oil and cocoa butter. Instead, we carefully select biocompatible, skin-friendly ingredients that are suitable for even the most sensitive and reactive skin.
However, we do not recommend Soothe & Seal Ultra-Rich Cream for acne-prone skin. While it is formulated to be non-comedogenic, it is intended for dry, rough and stressed skin and may be too heavy for those prone to acne.
-
Yes, every Song Lab product is completely fragrance-free — including no added fragrance, no essential oils, and no masking agents.
Fragrance is one of the most common causes of irritation and allergic contact dermatitis, especially in babies, kids, and those with sensitive or eczema-prone skin. That’s why we don’t just avoid synthetic fragrance — we avoid all fragrance components, even naturally derived ones.
Our products are also free from:
- Essential oils (like lavender, citrus, or tea tree)
- Botanical extracts used for scent
- Any ingredients classified under “parfum” or “aroma”
This is part of our commitment to making ultra-hypoallergenic, clinically safe skincare that supports even the most delicate skin barriers.
-
It means we intentionally exclude ingredients known to trigger allergic contact dermatitis, based on the American Contact Dermatitis Society’s (ACDS) Core Allergen Series — a trusted list used by dermatologists to identify common skin allergens.
These allergens are often found in everyday skincare products and include:
- Fragrances and masking agents
- Preservatives like formaldehyde releasers and methylisothiazolinone (MI/MCI)
- Botanical extracts and essential oils
- Lanolin, propylene glycol, and other high-risk emollients
This is part of what makes our products ultra-hypoallergenic by design
-
Yes — all Song Lab products are formulated without food-based ingredients, which studies suggest may increase risk for development of food allergies and skin sensitization, especially in babies and young children.
This includes avoiding:
- Nut oils (e.g., almond oil, shea butter, peanut oil)
- Coconut oil
- Oats and oat extracts
- Soy, wheat, dairy and other food-derived proteins
- Honey, fruit enzyme and food-scented botanicals
Our decision is based on emerging research that shows early skin exposure to food ingredients — especially on compromised or eczema-prone skin — may increase the risk of developing food allergies.
-
Song Lab is deeply inspired by the science-first, skin-barrier-focused philosophy of Korean skincare.
Our founders grew up taking annual trips to Seoul, bringing empty suitcases to pack full of Korean skincare and make-up products.
Here’s how that influence shows up in our products:- Barrier-first approach.
Korean skincare emphasizes supporting the skin barrier rather than stripping or over-treating. Our formulas reflect that — gentle, hydrating, and repair-focused. - Biocompatible, skin-native ingredients.
We use ingredients like ceramides, panthenol (provitamin B5), squalane, and beta-glucan — all staples of Korean "ATO" products used for supporting sensitive skin barriers - Preventative approaches.
Unlike Western skincare, which often focuses on treating visible problems, Korean skincare emphasizes maintaining a healthy, resilient skin barrier over time to help prevent issues from escalating in the first place
- Barrier-first approach.
-
Provitamin B5, also known as panthenol, is a deeply hydrating, skin-repairing ingredient that plays a key role in supporting the skin barrier.
When applied to the skin, panthenol converts to pantothenic acid — also known as vitamin B5, a compound that is naturally found in the skin and plays a key role in maintaining a healthy barrier.
Why it matters:
- Pantothenic acid is already part of your skin’s biology, which makes panthenol incredibly biocompatible and well-tolerated, even on sensitive or baby skin
- It supports skin hydrating by drawing water into skin and helping reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL)
- It also has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, making it ideal for calming irritation, dryness and redness
- We use 5% in Soothe & Seal ultra-rich cream, a level supported by clinical research to deeply hydrate, reduce visible irritation and strengthen & restore skin barrier.
Because it’s already native to the skin, provitamin B5 helps support what’s already there — gently, effectively, and safely. -
Dermatologists love petrolatum for a reason - it is best-in-class at what it does. Studies have shown that a 5% concentration of petrolatum can reduce trans epidermal water loss (TEWL) by more than 98%, compared to 20-30% reduction with other commonly used occlusives.
We have looked at the research on safety of petrolatum and mineral oil - and when properly refined, studies have shown they are completely safe in skincare. A review of 13 studies showed that there's no evidence that mineral oils or petrolatum become percutaneously absorbed - and therefore, use in skincare do not present a health risk to the consumer. In fact, petrolatum and mineral oil are two of the least allergenic skincare ingredients - given their stable and inert nature.
To provide extra layers of peace of mind to our customers, we use European Pharmacopeia grade white petrolatum (lip care grade and food grade) and European Pharmacopeia grade mineral oil. European Pharmocopeia is often considered safer than USP petrolatum due to its stricter purity standards.
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics acknowledges that there are no known safety risks to petrolatum when properly refined - and call out that consumers do not need to avoid products using white petrolatum.
